Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has made history after becoming the first player from the island nation to be named in FIFA’s official Team of the Tournament for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The veteran shot-stopper earned his place in the prestigious Best XI following a series of outstanding performances that helped Cape Verde enjoy a historic and memorable campaign at the tournament co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Vozinha’s heroics between the posts saw him stand shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the biggest names in world football as FIFA unveiled its 4-3-3 Team of the Tournament after Spain clinched the World Cup title.
World champions Spain dominated the selection with three players—defenders Marc Cucurella and Pedro Porro, alongside midfield general Rodri, whose commanding displays were instrumental in La Roja’s title-winning campaign.
Runners-up Argentina were represented by captain Lionel Messi, who once again demonstrated his enduring class with an influential tournament, while defender Lisandro Martínez also secured a place in the elite lineup.
France also had three players selected, with Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano recognised for their outstanding contributions. England midfielder Jude Bellingham retained his status as one of the game’s brightest stars, while Norway’s prolific striker Erling Haaland completed the attacking trio after an impressive goalscoring campaign.
The Team of the Tournament features players from seven countries, reflecting the quality and diversity of talent showcased throughout the competition.
For African football, however, Vozinha’s inclusion remains the standout story. His remarkable performances not only earned him global recognition but also elevated Cape Verde’s profile on the world stage, marking a historic milestone for the country’s football and inspiring a new generation of players.
