Nigeria’s government has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with faith-based organisations as part of efforts to address insecurity, promote national unity and foster sustainable development across the country.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this while receiving a delegation from the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria led by Matthew Hassan Kukah during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo said the Federal Government recognises the critical role of religious institutions in promoting peace, social cohesion and national stability, stressing that tackling the country’s security challenges requires collaboration with key stakeholders, including faith-based organisations.
According to the Minister, the administration remains committed to nation-building through inclusive governance, institutional reforms and strengthened internal security.
He noted that Nigeria has made significant progress over the years and expressed confidence that sustained partnerships between government and religious bodies would further enhance peace and development.
“The government cannot achieve sustainable national development without the active support of critical stakeholders. Faith-based organisations have a vital role to play in promoting peaceful coexistence, national unity and security,” he said.
The meeting focused on deepening collaboration between the Ministry of Interior and the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in areas including national security, good governance, social cohesion and initiatives aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence.
Earlier, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah commended the Federal Government for maintaining constructive engagement with the Church and applauded the Ministry of Interior for its openness to dialogue with religious organisations.
He reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to supporting government efforts aimed at strengthening national security, promoting sound public policies and advancing peace, justice and unity across the country.
The Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to sustain meaningful engagement with faith-based organisations and other stakeholders as part of a broader strategy to address insecurity and advance Nigeria’s development agenda.
