Security agencies have intensified security measures around the State House and the Federal Secretariat Complex in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, following weeks of protests over various national issues.
The heightened security is aimed at maintaining law and order as different groups continue demonstrations in the nation’s capital.
Among the protesters are citizens demanding the safe return of school pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State, while others are calling for the release of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.
Retired police officers also resumed an indefinite protest on Tuesday, accusing the Federal Government of failing to address their longstanding demands for improved pensions and welfare despite previous assurances.
The retirees assembled along the access road between the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation building and Eagle Square within the Federal Secretariat Complex.
On Wednesday, heavily armed security personnel, supported by armoured vehicles, were deployed to strategic locations around the State House and the Federal Secretariat Complex, with several roads either partially or fully restricted.
Although the security measures appeared slightly relaxed compared to previous days, access remained limited along some routes. Vehicles heading towards Aso Drive from the Federal Secretariat were subjected to strict checks, with only those proceeding to the State House and the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters allowed through.
The restrictions disrupted vehicular movement, forcing many civil servants, business owners and commuters to trek considerable distances to reach their destinations.
Residents expressed frustration over the continued road closures, saying the restrictions have made movement around the Central Area increasingly difficult.
“This blockage here and there around the Secretariat Complex is becoming too much. We can no longer pass through this axis without trekking long distances,” a commuter, Mr. Onuoha, lamented.
Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the duration of the enhanced security measures.
