…Alleges Constitutional Breaches Ahead of 2027 Elections
Human rights lawyer and legal counsel to the opposition parties, Barrister Kalu Kalu has petitioned the European Union (EU) over what he described as the alleged “subversion of constitutional order” in Nigeria, accusing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of violating constitutional provisions relating to the submission of academic credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Barrister Kalu, who spoke while submitting the petition at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, in a video circulating online, alleged that Tinubu failed to disclose the primary and secondary schools he attended in documents submitted to INEC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He further alleged that the President submitted what he described as false academic certificates to INEC, arguing that such an act would disqualify a candidate from contesting an election under the Nigerian Constitution.
Specifically, Barrister Kalu cited Section 137(1)(j) of the 1999 Constitution, which provides for disqualification where a person has presented a forged certificate to INEC.
According to him, the alleged submission of false credentials amounts to a violation of the Constitution and renders Tinubu ineligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Barrister Kalu also accused the Tinubu administration of using the machinery of government to undermine constitutional democracy, describing the alleged situation as a “mini coup” and “soft coup” against Nigerians.
He called on the European Union to intervene and support efforts aimed at restoring what he described as constitutional democracy in Nigeria.
The allegations contained in the petition could not be independently verified from the statement, and Kalu did not provide details in the remarks on the specific documents he alleged were false.
