The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Education Secretariat, has commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for ensuring schools are ready for smooth academic operations.
The Mandate Secretary, Dr. Danlami Hayyo who visited some of the schools at resumption on Monday 5th January, 2026, also expressed delight at the turnout of students.
Dr. Hayyo, represented by the Permanent Secretary, FCTA Education Secretariat, Joy Okeke, said the environment was peaceful and welcoming to the students, giving the credit to the Minister.
“The turnout is massive and impressive. It shows our children are hungry for knowledge,” Mrs. Okeke said during her visit to GSS Apo.
“The Honorable Minister has made the environment welcoming. My charge to students is simple: be attentive. To teachers: remain punctual and committed. Together, we will make 2026 a year of excellence.
At Government Science Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja Digest reports that the excitement was infectious. Adishokun Oluwashimilore, an SS3 student, was already deep into a Physics class. “We’ve hit the ground running,” he said. “The teachers are prepared, the environment is clean, and learning has begun in earnest.”
His classmate, Ogechukwu Victory, shared similar sentiments after her first Mathematics lesson. “The school is buzzing with excitement. My advice to those still at home? Come back now! Early resumption means more progress.”
Vice-Principal (Administration) of GSS Maitama, Suzie Wamandogo, revealed that boarding students had begun returning as early as Sunday, January 4. Despite the New Year festivities, 471 students had already settled in a feat she described as “remarkable.”
“Parents deserve commendation. Despite the celebrations, they prioritized their children’s education,” she noted. “Our teachers were also present yesterday to receive the students. It’s a collective effort.”
While public schools buzzed with activity, most private institutions visited by the inspection team were yet to fully resume.
At Beautiful Beginning Academy, the Principal, Mr. Henry Essang, explained that while teachers were on ground, students would fully return by Wednesday, January 7th.
“Our experience shows that many students delay resumption after the holidays. So, we adjusted our calendar to ensure full attendance,” he said. “Some parents have also communicated travel delays. But by Wednesday, we expect full compliance,” he stated.
