Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has intervened in the power disruption affecting Maitama and surrounding communities following the invasion and encroachment on the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)’s C2 Maitama Substation.
In an addendum issued on Saturday, AEDC said the matter had been escalated to the highest level of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), with the minister personally stepping in to facilitate an urgent resolution.
According to the electricity distribution company, Wike has been fully briefed on the incident and is coordinating efforts aimed at addressing the issues responsible for the outage.
“AEDC is working closely with the Honourable Minister, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to secure the substation, protect this critical electricity infrastructure and expedite the restoration of electricity supply,” the statement said.
The company commended the minister for what it described as his swift intervention and commitment to resolving the crisis, while assuring customers that every effort is being made to restore electricity safely and as quickly as possible.
AEDC also appealed for patience and understanding from residents affected by the prolonged outage.
The latest development follows widespread power outages in Maitama and neighbouring districts after the company’s C2 Maitama Substation was reportedly invaded and encroached upon, disrupting electricity distribution to several parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
Earlier, AEDC had raised concerns over the incident, warning that the illegal invasion of the facility posed serious operational and safety risks and had hampered efforts to maintain uninterrupted power supply. The company stressed that electricity substations are designated critical national infrastructure that must be protected from unlawful occupation and interference.
The intervention by the FCT minister is expected to accelerate efforts to secure the facility, resolve the dispute surrounding the encroachment, and restore normal electricity supply to affected residents and businesses.
