The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the European Union (EU) to develop a state-of-the-art waste management centre in Abuja, in a move aimed at strengthening sustainable urban development.
FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, disclosed this during a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, on Thursday in Abuja.
Wike reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the EU, noting that the proposed project would significantly improve sanitation and enhance the quality of life for residents of the capital city.
“This partnership will prioritize sustainable urban development and improve living standards for Abuja residents,” the minister said, while commending the EU’s continued support to Nigeria, including the renovation of the FCT High Court.
On his part, Ambassador Mignot highlighted the EU’s expanding footprint in the FCT, pointing to the presence of 19 operational embassies and ongoing collaborations in justice sector digitization, police support, and disability inclusion.
He explained that the waste management initiative forms part of a broader EU urban development agenda, which also covers water systems and infrastructure planning.
“European expertise can help transform Abuja into a model city,” Mignot said.
The meeting also addressed long-standing land allocation issues affecting 43 Nigerian staff of the EU delegation, some dating back to 2007. Wike assured that the matter would be resolved promptly, adding that efforts were underway to recover illegally occupied diplomatic lands, including those belonging to Switzerland and other European countries.
Discussions further covered the ongoing rehabilitation of the IBB Golf Club by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, as well as opportunities for the FCTA to explore investments with EU member states.
