African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has questioned the whereabouts of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, asking who is currently in charge of the country following their separate trips abroad.
Sowore raised the question in a post on his official Facebook page on Monday, alleging that Tinubu had been away from the country for more than three weeks without formally transferring power.
President Tinubu reportedly departed Nigeria on August 30 for a working vacation in Europe as part of his annual leave.
Similarly, Vice President Shettima left Abuja on Saturday to represent the President at the ongoing 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States.
Shettima arrived in New York on Sunday and is expected to address the UN General Assembly during the week.
Reacting to the development, Sowore questioned whether the President had formally handed over presidential powers to another authority before leaving the country.
“Tinubu has been away for more than 21 days, allegedly on vacation,” Sowore wrote.
“The VP Kashim Shettima has also left Nigeria for UNGA, with no handover notes in sight. Who is in charge of Nigeria at the moment?”
His comments have drawn attention to the constitutional provisions governing the transfer of presidential functions when the President is away from the country.
