The Senate on Wednesday passed the Nigerian Police Trust Fund Bill which aimed at strengthening funding for the training, procurement of security equipment, acquisition of machinery, and improvement of the welfare of personnel of the Nigerian Police Force to enhance accountability and effective service delivery.
This was sequel to the consideration of the report submitted by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs on the Police Trust Fund Act (Repeal & Re-enactment) Bill.
After the clause by clause consideration of the bill in the Committee of the Whole, the lawmakers voted overwhelmingly for its passage through voice vote.
In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio said the bill represents a significant step toward strengthening the country’s security architecture through improved funding and enhanced welfare for police personnel.
The Senate President noted that better welfare packages and improved operational capacity would boost the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining law and order across the country.
Akpabio also stressed the importance of inclusiveness, assuring that gender considerations would continue to receive attention in the implementation of policies and programmes under the framework of the Police Trust Fund.
He thanked lawmakers for their cooperation and commitment to the legislative process and urged them to remain focused on measures that would promote national security and public safety.
Following the passage of the bill, lawmakers agreed to conclude consideration of the day’s legislative business before proceeding on their scheduled recess.
