A new political platform, the South East Former Governors Forum, has been launched to strengthen regional cooperation and support ongoing development efforts across Nigeria.
The forum was formally unveiled on April 7, 2026, in Enugu, with the Honourable Minister of Works, David Umahi, joining other former governors at its maiden meeting.
This was contained in a statement on Tuesday, April, by Francis Nwaze, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Minister.
Speaking after the gathering, Umahi said the forum brings together former leaders from the South East to provide advisory support to current governors in the zone.
He noted that while some members were unavoidably absent due to engagements abroad, broader participation is expected in subsequent meetings.
According to him, the forum is non-partisan and open to all former governors from the region, regardless of political affiliation.
Its primary objective, he said, is to work closely with serving governors on key regional and national issues.
The forum also commended the efforts of incumbent governors in the South East, acknowledging their contributions to the development of the region.
Members praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what they described as a nationwide infrastructure drive, highlighting ongoing projects in the South East as part of broader national development.
They also expressed appreciation for federal appointments given to individuals from the region.
The Minister further stated that governors in the South East remain supportive of the President and his administration, adding that the forum would continue to align with policies aimed at advancing national growth.
He disclosed that the group plans to expand its membership in the coming weeks, with more former governors expected to join, and will continue engaging with current state leaders to deepen collaboration.
As part of its inaugural activities, the forum paid a courtesy visit to Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.
Notable attendees at the meeting included former governors Sullivan Chime, Martin Elechi, Okezie Ikpeazu, Chris Ngige, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
The forum is expected to serve as a strategic platform for fostering unity, continuity in governance, and sustained development in the South East.
