The Honourable Minister of Works, David Nweze Umahi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Most Reverend Dr. Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing his death as a monumental loss to both the Church and the nation.
In a condolence message issued on April 12, 2026, Umahi said he received the news of the Bishop’s death with profound grief, noting that the late cleric was a revered spiritual leader and shepherd of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki.
According to the Minister, Bishop Chukwu’s passing marks the end of an era defined by selfless service, deep spirituality, and unwavering commitment to God’s work. He described the late Bishop as not only a spiritual father to his congregation but also a moral compass whose life embodied discipline and sacrificial leadership.
Umahi further highlighted the Bishop’s qualities as a teacher of the Word and a compassionate pastor who reached people across all social strata with humility and wisdom. He noted that at a time when society is in dire need of moral clarity and spiritual guidance, the Bishop’s death leaves a significant void.
The Minister, however, emphasized that the legacy of Bishop Chukwu would continue to inspire many, citing the enduring impact of his ministry in Ebonyi State and beyond.
On behalf of his family and the Federal Ministry of Works, Umahi extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic faithful, clergy, and religious of the Diocese of Abakaliki, as well as to the immediate and extended family of the late Bishop.
He prayed for the repose of the Bishop’s soul and for strength and fortitude for all who mourn his passing.
