The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has reopened the slip road linking the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway with Ring Road II at the Galadimawa Interchange in Abuja, following its closure to prevent seasonal flooding.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) reopened the road on Tuesday, October 27, after barricading it on July 7, 2026, to mitigate flooding during the rainy season.
Director of FEMD, Muhammad Dikko, said the decision to reopen the road followed the end of the rainy season and was aimed at easing traffic congestion around the interchange.
He explained that the slip road usually experiences flooding during Abuja’s rainy season, which typically begins in May, necessitating its temporary closure to protect motorists and other road users.
Dikko added that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and its Engineering Services Department were working to address the environmental challenges responsible for the recurring flooding.
“These agencies are proactive and are working towards a solution,” he said.
Also speaking, an engineer with the FCDA Engineering Services Department, Abdulkadir Musa, said reopening the slip road would improve traffic movement along Ring Road II.
He explained that motorists travelling towards Airport Road could now use the route, reducing pressure on adjoining roads.
Musa further said the reopening would help ease congestion affecting traffic from ISEX/S20, also known as Oladipo Diya Way, where construction work had contributed to traffic challenges.
He noted that the receding rains had made it possible to remove the barricade and restore access to the slip road.
Abuja Times reports that the reopening is expected to improve traffic flow around the Galadimawa Interchange, particularly for motorists connecting to Airport Road and other adjoining routes.
