The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has no active Ebola case following the evacuation of the Nigeria’s index patient to Switzerland, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced.
The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Monday, October 26, 2026.
Janabi said Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts, while Switzerland would take responsibility for the continued treatment of the patient and monitoring of her husband, identified as contact number 53.
According to him, the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed her through the acute phase of the illness and stabilised her condition before her transfer.
“Nigeria is now Ebola-free following the evacuation of the index patient to Switzerland,” Janabi stated.
He added that Nigeria would maintain close follow-up of the 52 contacts, while Switzerland would assume responsibility for the patient’s continued management and monitoring of her husband.
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare had earlier confirmed an imported Ebola case linked to Uganda, prompting health authorities to place 53 contacts under surveillance in Abuja.
Although the evacuation means Nigeria currently has no active Ebola case, the continued monitoring of exposed contacts remains important to prevent further transmission.
Abuja Times reports that the development underscores the importance of sustained public health surveillance and coordination between Nigerian and international health authorities in containing the outbreak.
