The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Department has inaugurated a nine-member committee to oversee the screening and selection of individuals seeking membership in various sports associations across Abuja.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to reform and strengthen sports administration in the territory. It follows a recent call for interested stakeholders to join sports associations, aimed at broadening participation and introducing fresh ideas into the system.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Director of the department, Luka Istifanus, said the move became necessary due to concerns over weak leadership and lack of commitment, which have hindered progress in some associations. He noted that the committee’s responsibility is to ensure that only individuals with integrity, dedication, and genuine passion for sports are admitted.
Istifanus emphasized that sports development cannot depend solely on government support, pointing out that limited resources make it important to engage private stakeholders and enthusiasts. He urged members of the committee to carry out their duties with diligence and maintain transparency throughout the screening process.
He also warned against any attempt to manipulate the system, stressing the need for a fair and credible selection process that prioritizes meaningful contributions to sports development in the FCT.
Chairman of the committee, Godwin Bamigboye, expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in the team, assuring that members would work closely with stakeholders to ensure that competent individuals emerge.
In the same vein, a representative of the FCT sports associations, Albert Atiwurcha, described the assignment as a significant responsibility. Drawing from his experience in sports administration, he reaffirmed the commitment of the associations to support initiatives that will enhance sports development across the territory.
The committee, with Clinton Ayuk serving as secretary, has already commenced the screening of applications submitted by prospective members.
