As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has stressed that democracy extends beyond periodic elections and requires active citizen participation, respect for the rule of law, and a commitment to national unity and development.
Director-General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the call in a Democracy Day message, urging citizens to deepen democratic values and contribute meaningfully to governance at all levels.

Issa-Onilu described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolizing the resilience, courage, and determination of Nigerians in their struggle for democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
According to him, democracy remains the most inclusive and accountable system of government because it gives citizens the opportunity to choose their leaders freely, hold public officials accountable, and participate actively in national affairs.
“Today, we celebrate not only the heroes and heroines who made sacrifices for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria, but also the enduring spirit of the Nigerian people who continue to uphold democratic ideals despite various challenges. Democracy gives every citizen a voice and offers the best platform for peaceful national development, social justice, and economic progress,” he said.
The NOA boss emphasized that the success of democracy depends on continuous citizen engagement rather than elections alone.
The DG noted that democratic governance thrives when citizens respect diverse opinions, uphold civic responsibilities, and work towards the collective good.
He also urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to reject misinformation, political violence, hate speech, and other actions capable of weakening national cohesion and democratic institutions.
Issa-Onilu reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening democratic culture through sustained voter education, civic enlightenment campaigns, community engagement, and advocacy for responsible citizenship.
He commended government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, the media, and development partners for their contributions to democratic governance and peaceful coexistence across the country.
The NOA DG called on Nigerians to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their faith in the nation’s democratic journey and work together towards building a more united, peaceful, and prosperous country.
