The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced major desilting operations across Abuja to reduce the risk of flooding and improve the free flow of stormwater following recent flooding incidents in parts of the Federal Capital City.
The exercise, being carried out by the Department of Facilities Maintenance and Management (FMM), involves the clearing of drainage channels, gully inlets and manholes clogged with accumulated silt, debris and waste.
The operation has so far covered major locations including Yakubu Gowon Crescent in Asokoro, Constitution Avenue beside NNPC Towers, Jabi, Apo, Gudu District and ONEX by Camp WU Bassey.
According to the FCTA, the intervention is designed to prevent water stagnation, improve movement along affected roads and protect lives, property and public infrastructure during the rainy season.
Speaking during the exercise, the Director of FMM, Engr. Dr. Ayuba A. Usman, said the administration was committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents through effective maintenance of public infrastructure.
He said an effective drainage system was crucial to preventing flooding capable of disrupting lives and economic activities in the nation’s capital.
Ayuba also stressed the importance of regular desilting as part of the FCTA’s broader strategy to strengthen Abuja’s drainage network and minimise the impact of flooding.
He, however, appealed to residents to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, warning that blocked drains could worsen flooding.
The FMM Director urged residents to take responsibility for public infrastructure by disposing of waste properly and keeping drainage channels free of refuse.
He assured residents that the FCTA would continue to address maintenance needs across the territory to create a safer and more functional environment for residents.
