The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has flagged off the construction of official residences for heads of courts in Abuja, marking a significant milestone in the country’s judicial infrastructure development.
Abuja Times reports that the project, which aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to enhance the welfare and performance of judicial officers nationwide.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, at Asokoro District on Monday 13th October, 2025, Wike emphasized that the initiative is a direct response to President Tinubu’s directive to improve the welfare of judicial officers.
The Minister noted that judges should no longer reside in rented houses that expose them to security risks and compromise their independence.
The project, backed by the 2024 and 2025 FCT budgets, will provide fully furnished residences for the President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, President of the National Industrial Court, and Chief Judge of the FCT High Court.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, described the project as a tangible expression of President Tinubu’s vision to strengthen the judiciary and consolidate democratic governance in Nigeria. He commended Wike for his leadership and effective coordination with the judiciary, noting that the provision of secure and befitting accommodations for Heads of Court will enhance operational independence, personal security, and institutional dignity.
Wike assured that the project will be completed within 12 months and that the residences will become the personal property of the occupants upon retirement.
He also expressed appreciation to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice for his collaboration and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to completing the project.
The project is expected to not only boost judicial welfare but also create job opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers during construction. With this initiative, the Tinubu administration is taking a significant step towards ensuring that judicial officers have a secure and dignified living environment, which is essential for the effective dispensation of justice.
