The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has commended the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her consistent dedication to maternal and child welfare through the annual First Baby of the Year initiative.
Dr. Mahmoud described the initiative as a compassionate and enduring tradition that underscores the First Lady’s deep concern for mothers, newborns and families, while symbolising hope and care at the very beginning of life.
She made the remarks while accompanying Senator Tinubu to the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja, where they officially welcomed the first baby born in the FCT in 2026.
Congratulating the parents and family of the newborn, the Minister noted that the arrival of the first baby of the year represents hope, renewal and fresh beginnings, not only for the FCT but for the nation at large.
Dr. Mahmoud also praised the commitment and professionalism of healthcare workers — including doctors, nurses, midwives and support staff — for their tireless service in ensuring safe deliveries and quality maternal and child healthcare, even during festive periods.
Reaffirming the FCT Administration’s resolve, the Minister stated that under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Territory would continue to strengthen its healthcare system through improved infrastructure, skilled manpower and expanded access to services.
“As we usher in 2026, let us recommit ourselves to protecting mothers and children, supporting families and building a healthier Abuja,” she said, stressing that every child deserves the best possible start in life.
She further assured residents that the FCT Administration, under the leadership of the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, remains committed to promoting health and family well-being as critical pillars for sustainable development.
Meanwhile, the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat has begun the distribution of essential neonatal kits to nursing mothers across primary healthcare centres in the six area councils of the Territory.
At Garki Hospital, Dr. Mahmoud also received twin babies born on New Year’s Day, further highlighting the significance of the occasion.
Speaking on behalf of the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Director of the Child Development Department, Dr. Idris Yahaya, said the distribution of neonatal kits reflects the First Lady’s enduring commitment to maternal and child welfare.
Items distributed include baby wrappers and blankets, baby clothes, disposable and reusable diapers, baby towels, soap, lotion or petroleum jelly, methylated spirit for cord care, hand sanitizers and other essential supplies.
He noted that the initiative remains a strong statement of care, compassion and renewed hope for families as they welcome new lives into the world.
