Rescue operations are continuing at the scene of the collapsed three-storey building in the Gudu District of the Federal Capital Territory, with emergency officials confirming that five persons have died from the incident.
The building, which was under construction behind Gudu Market, collapsed at about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, trapping several labourers working at the site.
Officials of the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) disclosed that 16 persons had so far been rescued from the rubble, while 12 of the survivors were taken to the Federal Medical Centre Abuja, Asokoro District Hospital and Maitama Hospital for treatment.
Emergency response agencies at the scene include FEMD, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service and the FCT Police Command.
Also participating in the operation are personnel of the Nigerian Army, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Emergency Medical Services and officials of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat led by the Mandate Secretary, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe.
Authorities said efforts were still ongoing to locate and rescue more victims trapped beneath the debris as investigations into the cause of the collapse continue.
