The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that one of the 100MVA 132/33kV transformers at the Apo Transmission Substation in Abuja tripped in the early hours of Thursday, causing a temporary capacity deficit on affected feeders.
In a statement issued on Friday by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, TCN said the transformer tripped at about 12:56 a.m. on May 22, 2026, on differential relay indication while on no load.
According to the statement, preliminary inspection revealed oil spillage around the transformer, while further investigations by TCN engineers identified faults on the red and yellow phase 33kV bushings of the affected 100MVA power transformer.
TCN disclosed that the red phase bushing has since been restored, while repair works are still ongoing on the yellow phase.
The company stated that, following the incident, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) was requested to supply customers connected to the affected outgoing 33kV feeders through alternative TCN feeders within its franchise area pending the completion of repairs.
“Our engineers are working assiduously to restore the transformer and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience the incident has caused AEDC and electricity customers fed from the affected feeders,” the statement said.
The development may affect electricity supply to some parts of Abuja served by the Apo Substation until the repair works are fully completed.
