AEDC Reconnects Power to FCT Water Board After Public Outcry, Sets Two-Week Ultimatum

Share

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc. (AEDC) has ordered the immediate reconnection of electricity supply to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Water Board following widespread complaints by residents over disruptions to water supply in the nation’s capital.

The power distributor said the earlier disconnection was due to the accumulation of over one year of unpaid electricity bills by the FCT Water Board, despite repeated notices and engagements aimed at resolving the debt in line with regulatory provisions.

In a holding statement issued on Friday in Abuja, AEDC acknowledged the concerns and appeals from residents, noting that access to water is critical to public health and community wellbeing.

According to the company, the Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, approved the reconnection to enable the prompt restoration of water services across affected areas of the FCT.

The company, however, stressed that the reconnection is conditional. AEDC disclosed that it has granted the FCT Water Board a two-week deadline to present and commence a credible payment plan toward settling its outstanding electricity obligations.

While reaffirming its openness to dialogue and collaborative solutions, AEDC warned that failure to meet the agreed terms within the stipulated period would leave it with no option but to reapply service disconnection in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

AEDC reiterated that disconnection remains a last resort and assured residents of its commitment to transparent engagement, regulatory compliance and the delivery of sustainable electricity services in the Federal Capital Territory.
