The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has commenced risk assessments of buildings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as a proactive measure against fire outbreaks.
The Controller General of Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, disclosed this on Thursday, during a visit to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Headquarters in Abuja.
According to Adeyemi, the fire outbreak that happened in Lagos which led to citizens jumping from two storey buildings was an embarrassment to the country.
To prevent a similar occurrence in the FCT, the CG said the Service has begun comprehensive and thorough risk assessments on the buildings in the nation’s capital.
In his words “we don’t want any of this embarrassment to happen here in Abuja, like it happened in Lagos.
“We have almost all the embassies here in Abuja, so we have started doing risk assessments in Abuja”.
The CG’s visit to the TETFund’s headquarters in Abuja is aimed at strengthening collaboration with the Fund in curbing fire outbreaks in the Nigeria tertiary institutions.
He noted that through partnership, the Service can help in reducing fire incidents and loss of lives in existing buildings and in our federal universities all over the country.
Adeyemi urged the Fund to collaborate with the Service in revamping the long abandoned training schools under the FFS.
“We don’t know if TETFund can help us revive these training schools so that we will be able to have professional personnels from the Service,” the CG requested.
