The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters has recommended Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf for confirmation as a Commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC).

This recommendation follows a screening process where Prof. Yusuf appeared before the committee on October 8, 2025, and provided satisfactory explanations regarding his qualifications, competence, and suitability for the position.

Prof. Yusuf was a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Maiduguri, and holds an LLB (Hons) degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and an LLM from the University of Lagos.

He earned his PhD in Environmental Law and Policy for Petroleum and Natural Resources from the University of Dundee, Scotland. His research interests include international law of the sea, maritime boundary disputes, international environmental law, and policy, as well as international comparative petroleum law and policy.

The committee, led by Senator Adeniyi Ayodele, found Prof. Yusuf’s explanations satisfactory and recommended his confirmation to the Senate. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Prof. Yusuf as NLRC Commissioner in July 2025, and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters for further legislative action.

The committee’s recommendation now paves the way for the Senate to confirm Prof. Yusuf’s appointment.
