The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has come down hard on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over what it described as a “reckless and dangerous” comment directed at Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television.
The minister, during a recent media chat, reportedly said he could have broken his television screen and shot the journalist over comments made on the implications of a one-party system of government.
Reacting in a strongly worded statement, the Nigeria Union of Journalists expressed shock and outrage, describing the remark as an attempt to intimidate and silence the press.
The union noted that it had initially withheld its reaction in anticipation of a retraction or apology from the minister. However, it said the absence of any remorse reinforces concerns that the statement was deliberate.
“This calculated silence deepens our concern and reinforces the perception that the threat was intentional,” said NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi.
According to the NUJ, such comments from a high-ranking public official create a climate of fear for journalists and pose a serious threat to press freedom and democratic values.
The union therefore demanded an immediate and unreserved apology from Wike, describing his remarks as “reprehensible” and unacceptable in a democratic society.
It also called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to publicly condemn the statement and take decisive steps to protect journalists across the country.
“The safety and security of journalists are paramount to a healthy democracy. Any attempt to stifle their voices must be met with a unified and resolute response,” the statement added.
The NUJ further urged media organisations, civil society groups, and democracy advocates to stand in solidarity against what it termed a blatant attack on press freedom.
