Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and ammunition following a foiled abduction attempt in Port Harcourt.
The operation, which took place in the early hours of March 20, was triggered by a distress call from a 35-year-old resident, Fadi Nasser, who reported that armed men had stormed his residence along Orogbum Crescent, Woji Road, in the Government Reserved Area (GRA).
According to police sources, the assailants attempted to abduct the victim and opened fire during the attack. However, Nasser managed to escape unhurt, prompting a swift response from security operatives.
A major breakthrough came when a mobile phone suspected to belong to one of the attackers was recovered at the scene. Using technical intelligence, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit in Aluu tracked the device, leading to the arrest of one Joseph Abibo, identified as a member of the gang.
During interrogation, Abibo reportedly provided vital information that led police to the gang’s hideout. On arrival, operatives came under heavy gunfire from other members of the syndicate, resulting in a fierce exchange.
The police team overpowered the criminals, forcing several of them to flee. Security sources disclosed that about six suspects escaped into a nearby river with gunshot wounds.
A subsequent search of the hideout led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition believed to have been used in previous criminal operations.
The police said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle kidnapping networks and combat violent crime in Rivers State. A coordinated manhunt has been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover more weapons.

Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the development on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, said the command remains resolute in its fight against criminality.
