NYSC Pays Tribute to Former DG, Obasa, Hails His Lasting Legacy

By Beryl Odele

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has mourned the death of its former Director General, Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa, describing him as one of the founding fathers who laid the foundation for the Scheme’s administrative structure.

The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, expressed the condolences of the organisation during a condolence visit to the Obasa family in Ilorin, Kwara State.

Nafiu described the late Obasa as a pioneer manager whose contributions helped shape the NYSC into the institution it is today.

Obasa served as the third Chief Executive of the NYSC from 1979 to 1984, a period which the current Director General said recorded tremendous achievements for the Scheme.

He commended the late former DG for his contributions to the development of the NYSC, as well as the encouragement and support he personally received from him while he was alive.

According to Nafiu, the death of Obasa was a loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire NYSC family, whose members would continue to cherish his contributions and memories.

“I convey the condolences of the entire NYSC family to the Obasa family,” he said.

The Director General assured the family that the NYSC would continue to build on the solid foundation laid by its founding fathers and work towards making the Scheme stronger.

Responding on behalf of the family, Victor Obasa described his father’s death as shocking and expressed appreciation to the NYSC management for the condolence visit.

He said the family remained grateful to God for the life of the late Colonel Obasa and the enduring legacies he left behind.

“We are overwhelmed, and our family says thank you, NYSC, for the honour you gave our dad. We are very grateful to you for not forgetting him,” he said.
