The Federal Government has fulfilled the promises made to Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The team, coached by Rena Wakama, defeated Mali 78–64 in the final of the continental tournament held in August last year to retain the title.
In recognition of the achievement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a cash reward of the naira equivalent of $100,000 for each player, while the coach and every member of the technical crew received $50,000 each.
The President also conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all the players and technical team members.
In addition to the monetary reward and national honours, the Federal Government approved the allocation of one housing unit for each player, the coach and members of the technical crew.
The official documents for the houses and the national honours were presented to the team on Monday in Lyon, France by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, alongside the Director General of the commission, Bukola Olopade.
The presentation coincided with the team’s participation in the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament currently taking place in Lyon, where the Nigerian side is seeking qualification for the global championship.
D’Tigress’ AfroBasket victory further cemented Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball on the African continent and strengthened the country’s reputation as a powerhouse in the sport.
