The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling ecological and environmental challenges confronting oil-producing communities across the country.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, gave the assurance in Abuja while receiving a delegation of royal fathers from Okpe Kingdom, led by the Orodje of Okpe, His Royal Majesty Orhue I, Maj. Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd).
Akume acknowledged that decades of oil exploration have resulted in environmental degradation, coastal and gully erosion, flooding and other ecological problems in host communities.

He said the government, through the Ecological Project Office (EPO), would collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Environment to develop strategic interventions to address the concerns raised.
The SGF commended the Okpe Kingdom for safeguarding critical national assets, including oil wells and pipelines, noting their significant contribution to Nigeria’s economic growth.
Senator Akume also highlighted the Tinubu administration’s establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoniland to build technical capacity for addressing environmental challenges linked to oil exploitation.
He stressed that oil companies operating in host communities must fulfill their corporate social responsibility obligations.
Earlier, the Orodje of Okpe called for urgent federal intervention in shoreline protection, land reclamation and road infrastructure in Ugbokodo community of Delta State.
He said years of oil exploration and gas flaring have caused severe environmental degradation, shoreline erosion, land loss and recurrent flooding in the area.
The meeting underscored renewed collaboration between the Federal Government and oil-producing communities to confront longstanding ecological challenges.
