The Eagle Square, located in Abuja’s Central Business District, was filled to the brim with teachers who came from across the states to mark the 2025 World Teachers’ Day in Nigeria.
Abuja Times reports that as at about 12 noon, 5th October, 2025, teachers dressed in varied colourful attires were seen thronging the venue as security personnel struggled to control the mammoth crowd for proper coordination.
Some of the teachers rolled out their drums and other local music instruments; they sang and danced in excitement to make the celebration memorable.
This year’s World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession”, was organized by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Addressing the Nigerian teachers, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa pledged to revitalise the teaching profession in Nigeria.
The Minister said the Ministry has initiated numerous policies to revitalize the teaching profession to ensure teachers are professionally empowered and motivated.
Dr. Alausa explained that the policies, which includes National Teacher Policy, is to support the teachers to experience professional growth and fulfillment.
“Our experience has shown that when teachers are supported to work together through peer mentoring, joint lesson planning, co-teaching, and the use of digital platforms, learning outcomes improve, and teachers themselves experience professional growth and fulfillment.
“The Ministry initiated numerous Policies to revitalize the teaching profession including the National Teacher Policy which ensures that teachers are professionally empowered and motivated”, he said.
The Minister emphasized that peer support structures are being encouraged at school and zonal levels nationwide.
According to him, the sector is also leveraging ICT to connect teachers across states and provide access to global best practices, stressing that a robust continuous professional development opportunity through the Teachers Registration Council (TRCN) of Nigeria, National Teachers Institute (NTI) and Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) have be put in place.
In his remarks, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Audu Titus Amba said this year’s theme underscores the transformative potential of collaboration for teachers, schools and education systems.
According to him, such collaboration will not only help to reinforce a sense of belonging and purpose among teachers but also build resilient equitable education systems.
The year’s celebration brought together key stakeholders in the education sector to honour Nigerian teachers and reaffirm the Ministry’s commitment to promoting excellence and collaboration in the teaching profession.
The highpoint of the celebration was the giving of awards to outstanding teachers and schools.
